Easter weekend has arrived and instead of heading overseas for the four-day weekend, my family and I always spend time in the Eastern districts – especially North Side. Back in the day, my family would be camping on the beach, but nowadays we enjoy booking houses to share with siblings, cousins, and spouses. It’s typically a weekend filled with Caymanian home-cooking, but I don’t feel obligated to do this all weekend as restaurants will be open in the area.
Here are some of my favourites that have confirmed their opening days and times.
Grape Tree Café in Bodden Town is one of the best fish fry locations on island and they recently added Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork to their menu. They’re closed on Good Friday but will be open to the public from Saturday 8 April to Easter Monday between 11am-8pm.
Kaibo is open the entire weekend of Good Friday to Easter Monday from 11am-9pm. Not only are they located in Cayman Kai where many people camp and “glamp”, but they are your go-to place if you’re looking for live music on Friday, Saturday, and Monday this weekend. They are also hosting their family friendly Kitefest on Easter Monday if you are looking for an event to close out the weekend.
Big Tree BBQ is one of my favourite places for Caribbean-style BBQ as they are known for their barbecue beef ribs, pork ribs and chicken legs, plus island favourites like Cayman Style Beef, Fried Fish and Turtle Stew. Each dish is always served with an array of sides including rice & beans, potato salad and coleslaw. They’re planning to open Good Friday to Easter Sunday from 11am-6pm.
La Casita is allowing their staff to take the day off on Good Friday and Easter Monday, but they’ll be open on Saturday 8 April from 12-10pm and Easter Sunday from 4-10pm. Take a day from cooking and stop by for some of their famous Mexican cuisine and margaritas.
Other restaurants that you should definitely consider over the weekend include Tukka East, Vivine’s Kitchen, Captain Herman’s Fish Fry, Over The Edge, Czech Inn Grill and South Coast Bar & Grill.
No matter how you enjoy your weekend, I hope that you have a safe and happy Easter with lots of good food!
