Situated in the heart of George Town, Bread & Chocolate Vegan Bistro is Cayman’s only fully dedicated vegan restaurant, offering an inspired menu selection of innovative, flavoursome and exciting breakfast and lunch options, with creative daily specials.

Open since May of 2013, the restaurant’s continuing success is undoubtedly attributed to the dedication and inspiration of owners, husband and wife team Reno Ciantar and Agata Kalicki. They are uncompromising in their commitment to providing healthy, delicious, inventive vegan cuisine to the Cayman community.

Menu selection, ingredients and preparation.

Bread & Chocolate’s menu features an appetizing fusion of whole foods, combined with a large selection of local produce from ackee, scotch bonnet peppers, cucumber, coconut, mango, eggplant, avocado, plantain, and tomatoes.  They bake all their breads and desserts, make all their sauces and create everything, where possible, from scratch.

Their menu is determined by both Reno and Agata, then expertly executed by their team led by Head Chef Waydian, who has been with Bread & Chocolate since 2013.  Chef Waydian is also responsible for creating the selection of daily specials.

A must-try item is their extremely popular home-made pepper sauce, which, as well as being served with many menu items, is available for purchase by the jar. The recipe was created by Agata and is made using local scotch bonnet peppers!

CONK fritters (without the Conch) – a twist to a popular local dish and in-house favourite.

In keeping with Cayman tradition, Bread & Chocolate developed their very own CONK fritters.  Playing on the traditional spelling, they created an ethical (plant-based) version of this popular local dish by combining coconut, nori and kale as a vegan alternative to the original fritter, so dearly regarded by the local community.  Reno told me it was a tricky thing to accomplish, creating the perfect fritter alternative, as Conch Fritters are so important in the Caribbean that they had to ensure they did it right, or not at all.

I can attest they did it right!  The result is scrumptious, especially with the fiery scotch bonnet aioli, served on the side.

Another favourite menu item is their Pulled Porkless BBQ Jackfruit Sliders, which, simply put, is one of the best sandwiches you can try!

From their thoughtfully crafted menu to the repurposed décor and design in this intimate vegan bistro, it is clear that Bread & Chocolate is a labour of love. They put quality and sustainability before profitability, with a mission statement that their food be Modern, Responsible and Delicious.
